  • A light bulb in Livermore, CA has been working for 107 years.

Ever feel they just don't build things as well as they used to? You kind of have to agree after hearing about this 107 year old light bulb. Built in 1901 and installed in a fire department station in Livermore, CA that same year this light bulb has been used almost every day for 107 years and it is still going strong.

107-Year-Old Light Bulb Still Burns Bright
Bulb Has Its Own Web Site

    POSTED: 8:50 am PDT May 6, 2008

LIVERMORE, Calif. -- A light bulb at a fire station in California has been burning for the past 107 years.

According to the Livermore Fire Department, the 4-watt bulb was made by the Shelby Light Company and donated to the fire station.

Outside of a couple of moves, it has burned continuously ever since then.

Firefighters threw a party for the bulb when it turned 100 and it has its own Web site where people write to it.

Caretakers estimated that the bulb has burned for more than 1 million hours.

Fire officials said the bulb, if viewed from a certain angle, spells the word "on."

They said that is symbolic of their "always on duty" ethic.

Talk about craftsmanship. With new bulbs you're lucky to get one year out of them before they pop. The company in Ohio which made this bulb went out of business in 1914 but their bulb still works great.

A 4 watt bulb? Is there any light to see?

Maybe you don't know this, but if you built a 4 watt bulb today it'd last probably even longer.

What a monster non-story. You should be posting about the 75 San Diego college students busted for selling cocaine in their frathouse, now that's a story. It also explains you.

No, you'd make it to burn out after 10,000 hours so a replacement must be purchased to fuel the economy, like a good capitalist. If all lightbulbs last 1,000,000 hours, the bulb-making companies would be out of business

Most of the research activity in light bulbs today is to learn exactly how much oxygen you have to leave in the protecting gas that the bulb dies exactly after warranty.
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

What kind of idiot gets a lightbulb replaced under warranty?

Perhaps a non-obnoxious meaningful post would have been more useful/interesting than that... rather than being further evidence that Ozzy is wrong

I'm getting tired of having to explain every little detail to you. This has happened, what, three or four times in the past few weeks? You're smart enough to debunk it yourself, you just need to be poked.

Actually, Snoopy is right on a general basis.

Unlike the early time of the light-bulb market (and the same is true on pretty much every mature market), industrialists have to rely on consumers replacing their wares. As a result, industrialists rationally avoid focusing on long-term reliability, and can even purposefully restrict the life expectancy of their products.

If you disagree with me, make your point. Statements like that are obnoxious and rude... and show your immaturity (my second comment). You want people to treat you with respect, earn it.
