  • My throat hurts

    I think I'm getting sick.

Or maybe I just got a peanut stuck back there. It started hurting after I ate some crunchy peanut butter a few days ago. Sometimes I forget to chew.

Today I picked some avocados off the tree. There's maybe 30-40 of them just about ready to eat. Most years we only get a few off that tree. We've been rinsing out the mortar/grout buckets from the tile work under it, and it seems to really like all the water. (Not sure if it likes the mortar/grout, but it doesn't seem to have hurt.) We planted a lemon tree last year, and it's about 3 foot high and literally covered in lemons. It looks more like a pile of lemons than a tree. They're a weird sort of lemon (pinkish inside, greenish stripes along it's axis on the peel), and I have no idea if they're ripe or not. They're sweeter than regular lemons, but not as much juice.

Most of the tile work on the house is finished. Still have to grout the shower. I thought the walls were going to be the tough part, but since they're smooth finish and homogeneous layout, it was really easy. The floor with the rough surface and varied size pattern, was a lot tougher. Spent a week just cleaning those floor tiles

Finished up a lot of the painting, still more to do. (Main thing is trim and siding outside.) My Aunt likes glass brick and wainscoting... so it's there. Carpet is installed, almost all the floorboards and trim are finished. Still need to build a vanity for the bathroom, install a potty, and finish the walk-in closet.

Here's the master suite I've been living in during the construction. My Aunt will be claiming it once it's all done. (Talk about a lack of incentive to finish... )

    Still no potty:

The tile work, soap dishes will go in after the grout:

Glass brick lets light in from the skylights in the stairwell: (at least when there's light outside)

The tail end of the sunset out the window:

A better look at the view:

How I spend my weekends: (because the beach is too crowded, and I've been anti-social lately.
cool breeze coming in through the window and the sun shining = perfect nap.)

Nice work, right down to the bull nose on the rock. I think you know what's up Aeson. When you gonna put in the soap dish, and where?

Great tile work. I've spent more time cleaning rough tile than is reasonable.

Are you trying to look like you're sleeping while you take your own pic?

I take pictures in my sleep :P

(I was just showing off my eyelashes, plus the sun was kinda bright so the pictures I took with my eyes open, they weren't really open much anyways)

Left the opening for one soapdish that you can see centered just above the tub. There's another opening in the tile about 2 feet down from the shower head and off to the right a bit that you can't see.

I really don't know what's up until after it's finished... learning on the job. The jobs usually last just long enough for me to figure out how to do it right and wish I could go back in time and do it the easy way from the start!@

That's the reason why it's good to build bars. When you're done you're too drunk to give a ****.

Aeson, I gotta admit..."I was just showing off my eyelashes" is something I never expect to say.

Why did the tiles need cleaning? Bear with me, I probably just don't understand the terminology.

When we were putting grout into the joints, some of it would get in the rougher surfaces. The color of the grout was close to that of the tiles, especially when wet, so we ended up with grout on the face of the tiles in many places. Once the grout dried it was very difficult to clean off, had to scrub it with brushes and an acid solution. And again, when it was wet with the acid solution it was difficult to see, so we had to go over the floors a couple times before it was all gone.

The smooth tiles have nowhere for the mortar or grout to hide, and the smooth finish doesn't bond to either very well. So cleaning it up is as easy as wiping it down with a damp cloth. Even after the mortar or grout is dried.

                  Thanks

I wasn't around for the framing/drywall here, but have done that in the past several times. And I've had to work on fixing the framing/drywall mistakes a lot on various projects around here. It seems whoever did the framing wasn't familiar with right angles or straight lines, and whoever did the drywall didn't care much either. Even had to locate and dig out a few electrical boxes that got drywalled right over

So that's how the framing and drywall got to be such a mess...

The avocado tree. My camera sucks so you can't see many of the avocados, but they're there! (Part of the tree overhangs the alley, and there doesn't seem to be any avocados on that side of the tree. Me-thinks someone has been harvesting them. Either that or the tree just really dislikes the alley.)

The lemon tree. Maybe the lemons just aren't ripe yet? Like I said, they're pinkish inside, not a lot of juice, and sorta sweet. Almost like pink lemonade. Anyways, we bought this tree last year for $30 and even though it's only 3 feet tall there's at least $30 of (weird) lemons on it right now. Plants are cool.

And some planters built out of old fence boards and damaged posts of the front porch railing that we've replaced. They'll be moved out to the garden, filled with dirt, and make a nice home for some tomato and basil plants.
