    Banana.

Being a man is realizing that you are a responsible individual, which means that you can make decisions and you know that you have to deal with the consequences of those decisions.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
    - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

What you're saying could as well apply to adult males and females, IMO. But what's the difference between a man and a woman? When we say "be a man, stop being a wuss, stop being a *****", what do we mean? It probably means that we feel that he conforms to how we think a man should think and act. Grandpa mentioned a couple in the poll: being a good provider, being a good father, being the head of the family, etc., etc. But those are very traditional social roles. And like Bob said, the times they are a-changin! Being a good provider, for example, is probably becoming less and less important.

          I appreciate all feedback

@ Nostromo, when I stated provider, it was a broad and general term for providing..i.e. security, staples, necessities, ect.

Monies is a part but not larger than the sum total of everything put together as a whole.

I am curious, how do you define or perhaps quantify becoming less and less important

Does not the social order become less stable with less values continued to be passed on and reinforced by those who helped bring a baby into the world?

Again, I am not "telling" you or anyone how to respond, just asking.

I am 48 and have seen a lot in my life.

I too have made a lot of mistakes and the bigger mistake I now see was my failure as a man to take charge of the office of which I fill, and that is to be activ;y involved in my fa,milies life, the life of those whom work for me and those that depend upon me.

If you want a real answer, and not just more bull****, then you're going to have to accept that outside of the biological sense of male, there is no answer, because it isn't a real question.

What counts as "a man" or normative standards of male behaviour is a cultural phenomenon. It differs among cultures, and in societies like ours it differs within cultures. So there is really no answer because the cultural norms of masculinity are essentially lies that we live by. They are conventions, and not very useful ones. Asking "what is a man?" is equivalent to asking "what is a ******?"

The sad truth of our species is that most of is are too stupid and weak minded to be real people, so we need to be told what to do and what to wear and what to say. "Being a man" is really an act of appalling cowardice. The same goes for status junkies, crass conservatives and all the other sheeple who inhabit the planet.

That's not to say that all social roles have no purpose. A society with no norms of behaviour would cease to function. The problem occurs when people use the norms to hide from reality or to avoid taking responsibility for their own decisions. If anything is the human disease, it is that. There's an interstice between the norms that are necessary for us to get along, and sanctioned areas of uncontroversial personal liberty. It is in that space that most of the bull**** and bigotry resides.

Me, I got plenty of chords my friend

However, simply strumming a chord doesnt cause music to be played, it usually takes a combination of chord coordination to cause me to be "struck" of which you have not gone there.

Thank you, however, for a response, this was the intent of my starting this thread.

You may not know it, but you are closer to how I feel about this subject than most of the other posts.

As stated earlier, i have been through a lot and seen lots more, and thank you for your input sir

I was only thinking of the money aspect. Since more and more women work, and have better and better salaries, providing for stuff like food and shelter is less and less the man's responsibility. But I suppose that providing for other things like security is still something that is expected, up to a certain point, from men.
