    What does the M stand for?

    In M-theory. I'm just wondering what peoples impressions are.

    I think its murky, but in a few years when I'm done with my studies I might think otherwise. For now I barley grasp the simplest string theories, any mathematics of the more complex ones are just gibberish to me and don't even register in my brain.


    For most of the rest of you this is just a pointless poll & thread about something beyond your understanding. Like most polls on poly.

      I agree, physics is overrated. If you want to discover where the action is today, look at biology and biochemistry, not at physics. And string theory is nothing more than recreational mathematics

          physics, indeed overrated

          It's way more difficult to develop theories or show causality in other sciences. Because it is more difficult to show the validity and evaluate or give it an opportunity to be falsified. By the way, intelligent design is not a theory because it can't be falsified. You can never ever measure or test the God factor. Thus, not a theory, you don't have the opportunity to try to disprove it (or test it). And exactly how are you showing the relation of phenomenas to... God? Impossible. It's pretty basic to show the relation between two phenomenas, I mean that's the idea of a theory. People are confusing ideas, quasi-everything and pseudoscience together. It's pretty bad at that as well. Sorry guys, it's not a theory in the least bit, or you have to change the meaning of theory to fit that one as well. It would be convinient though, just like ID

              Oh, we rather try to do science. But we can’t help it how people keep finding incredible and wonderful applications for the stuff we figure out.


              Now I do admit we do need a bit more time to figure stuff out, but I mean, what do you think we are doing? Chemistry?

                You twerp. Do you have any idea how many theoretical predictions of particle physics have been confirmed by each successive generation of particle accelerators? We do the math, so we know where to look and not waste trillions of euros chasing dragons. It can be proven or disproven. Theoretically. Well, as soon as we properly define what M actually is.

                ID can not. And for comparing ID to M I am severely tempted to throw a tantrum and call you nasty names. I will abstain since it isn’t quite worth the effort.
