If Poly as a whole is a community, think of the OT as the VA hospital. It's where all the people who helped build it in the past have retired to now that they can't contribute any more. They ***** and whine a lot, some out of bitterness and some out of love, but even though they can't participate at the level they once did, they still have an interest. Sometimes the interest is just hanging around talking to the other vets, sometimes it's more substantial, but it's there and it's as real to them as the work that's actually being done is to the people who can still do it. So when somebody comes along that claims their way is right and, ***** and whine as you will, it won't matter, they get a little uppity. Even the guys that just shuffled papers stateside contributed, and by placing your contributions above theirs (rightfully or not) you're taking away their stake in what they helped build. And when they really do feel like the current management is letting what they helped build fall apart, and then have their input not just ignored but sometimes insulted on top of that, they start to get a little annoyed.

Despite that, we still invite everyone to the hospitality of our living room in hopes of sharing information, sharing our joys, sharing our sorrows, asking others for help, having fun, and even some dissagreements.

We are not perfect, and believe it or not, I don't think anyone of us has has ever claimed to be.

You are guests in this house. We invite you, and you come hoping for a good experience. We take pride in that.

The posters here are far more responsible for what this site is than the owners/moderators are.

Without us, to use your analogy, you have an empty living room. We are not simply your customers or your guests; we provide the content which people are seeking to read when they come here.

Your imperious attitude in typing the above is, frankly, quite unsettling to me.

Nine months ago I deliberately got myself banned in protest of the utterly ridiculous moderator attitudes toward Asher. Asher is one of the more interesting and intelligent posters here. He certainly adds to my experience as much as you or any of the other mods does, but because he has both the ability to get under people's skin and the inability to turn it off the moderators have decided to make one set of rules for him and one for everybody else. I certainly am allowed to get away with **** which would land him in the clink for weeks at a time.

A week or two ago I decided I'd been gone long enough and came back.

I had decided to let the Asher/Locutus nonsense go, and was even ignoring the standard childish rewriting of thread history.

I am pleased that an open discussion of moderator actions was made available in here.

However, reading your post I have no urge to stay here and help you build a house which you don't think I have any ownership rights to.

See you all in 6 months.

Why are people griping? Being banned from Poly is hardly the end of the world.

The moderation here is pretty light. I stopped posting for a long time because I thought it had become too lax.

I have made some really great friends here. Learned a lot of things I never knew. Seen points of view I had never thought about. It truly has been a great experience!

I was at your house a while back and was playing my favorite game. We had broken into teams to make it more fun. In the other corner of the room, someone on my team did something stupid that I had no idea of. Suddenly the owner's of the living room start yelling at me because I didn't take responsibility for what my friend did. I was threatened to be thrown out of the house unless I admitted that I was a cheater.

I'll never forget that. And while I still am grateful that I can hang out in your living room and enjoy the games I love with people I like...I will forever be looking over my shoulder wondering if my host has a new tray of appetizers or an axe for my back.

Been wanting to say that for a while. Thank you very much for giving me a place to do it.

Whereas as my friend Jim has been able to somewhat move on and continue to stomach those who condemned him so vilely and publicly humiliated him, I have never really been able to enjoy a full level of participation at this site since !


Frankly the moderation standard of this site is a disgrace, the double standards appalling. Ive lost count of the times ive read the old blah blah about ive had threats hate mail etc etc etc from a certain mod, as one of the methods used to beat people into silence. Im so sorry for you , no really.

When I first came to this site as a member it was the civ3 stories section that captured my interest, never did I desire or require to be treated as second class, and never did I want so badly to sit in anyones living room. None of the aforementioned owners of the living room had any part to play in my interest in this COMMUNITY, and if anything it is the aformentioned, well some of them who have been responsible from driving me at least, out of said living room.

Ban me if this is a bannable post, I mostly only bother with this place to read these days, there is still some wit and good humour about.
