In a proposal sure to get the most attention in the near-term given record-setting oil prices, McCain proposed a suspension of the federal gas tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day - traditionally the heaviest season for driving. At just over 18 cents per gallon, that would save the average driver about $2.35 every time he fills up his tank.

Nice. How about we reduce the price while roads are being used the most. This will promote efficient utilization.

That's why toll roads stay toll roads, even after the toll road construction is paid. More roads, and road upkeep.
I just saw a news blurb on it last night.

I'm still more inclined to trust an illiterate over a literate, since the former is more likely to stay clear from attempting micromanagement.

And the lost revenue will be replaced by? Or will something be cut?

No, of course not. This is just America putting some more stuff on the 'ole credit card. Yay.

This is ridiculous. The only saving grace is that there is now zero chance that this proposal will be passed by the congress.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

When did you start quoting from the gospel of efficiency?

A serious question, since I was obsessed with the concept for a while, and I noticed you mentioned some similar stuff in another thread.

Of course, the best way to end our dependence on oil is to make it cheaper!

What's sad is that it would be almost political suicide to suggest hiking the tax up to levels prevalent in civilized countries.

I would love to see the federal gas tax gutted forever. States should fund the roads in their State. The economic benefit of a Federal Highway running through your State would make it insane for them to say no building a proposed highway. Why are the feds in our pocket on this issue ever anyway?

Why reduce dependence? The more we use then the quicker it will be gone and the quicker a replacement will be found.

Resources exist to be consumed. And consumed they will be, if not by this generation then by some future. By what right does this forgotten future seek to deny us our birthright? None I say! Let us take what is ours, chew and eat our fill.
