Delta, Northwest Approve Merger: Now World's Largest Airline
A MD-80 would have to be from another dimension to be that old.
Same fundamental design. I don't care if they updated the avionics and used a marginally new engine, it's still a DC-9.

MarkG, why are you arguing with Wiglaf? He is clearly right, and he's an expert on Greek matters. What qualifications do you have on aviation or Greekness? Please.
It was a Greek plane full of Greek people crashing into a mountain due ot Greek stupidity. I tire of your lies and disrespect, Mark.

It just so happens that this game "cemetery" was on the isle of Cyprus...so now we had the Greeks throwing all of their resupplies onto their "dead" units on Cyprus while the Turks were doing the same - Totally ignoring the raging war in central Europe - for the sole reason as to lay final claim to the entire island with an international audience as their witness.

Does Continental have good in flight entertainment?
Not really, no. I just flew Continental to Hawaii and back. They do have the personal video screens, which is good. The problems are: 1) the system was buggy - it was down for most of the (11 hour) flight out, and just seemed generally glitchy; and 2) IMO the games were ****e. The movies were bad too but that goes w/o saying, right?

Delta posts $6.4 billion loss, Northwest loses $4.1 billion on soaring fuel prices
ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, said Wednesday its loss widened in the first quarter to a whopping $6.39 billion because of soaring fuel prices and the steep decline in the company's market value.
Northwest Airlines, which will be acquired by Delta to create the world's largest airline, reported a $4.1 billion loss in the first quarter.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. What are the economies of scale in aviation anyway? They won't get the fuel cheaper just because they are big. Will they get new planes cheaper if it is a big order? Can they save so much by letting go redundant staff? I'm curious how this works.

I was really surprised that both the Greek and Turkish Governments were willing to use a computer assisted game as evidence to NATO of their entitlement to the Isle of Cyprus - but then, this issue has been brewing for years.
I guess there is nothing to prepare Americans for this sort of petty nationalism that is available in large quantities in Europe.
They can have higher load factors by cancelling some flights now.

That is so obvious and shallow. Are you a business consultant?

Northwest has flights from Portland to Manila that we were planning on checking out for the next trip. Something has to screw that up, but this is fast screw up service.
Northwest has had a lot of the western North America to Asia routes locked up for several decades now. Since international flights are still highly regulated and competition is limited (mostly because you need government authorization and many governments want to protect their airlines from competition) these routes end up being highly profitable.
I imagine that was one of the key reasons Delta bought Northwest.
Rumour has it, United and US Airways are close to announcing a merger. Other reports say that they're waiting on union approval and could postpone an announcement in early May.
