And maybe one pilot was German. What about the co pilot? Yep a Greek. Not that it matters. If the FAA inspectors were mexican immigrants you'd still blame it on the USA.

I hate DC-9/MD-80s and avoid them at all costs. I think they're death traps. Especially the ones that are 40+ years old and still flying.

Well, I have noticed that Continental still offers meals, pillows, and blankets (in ALL cabins) when the other airlines (Delta, for one) have told the paasengers to basically "suck it up". After my experience with Delta almost 3 years ago, I promised myself that I would never fly their airline again...and I have not to this day. Quite frankly, Delta Airlines is RUDE to their vital resource - their customers.

This brings up an interesting situation that I was involved in while stationed in Germany...

I worked in a computer-assisted war-gaming facility in Germany (The Warrior Preparation Center). We hosted a NATO war-game exercise.

Both Greece and Turkey are a part of NATO. They were both present (well, their command staff's were).

So the war-game kicks off with English, Dutch, Belgian, French, German, Italian, Grecian, Turkish, American...and even Swedish (for a northern navel scenario).

I was working in the OPFOR (opposing forces) - Yes, we were the "bad guys" invading NATO. We had national "players" from all of the countries playing as the invaders as well...

We made a BIG mistake. We placed both a Greek command staff officer and a Turkish command staff officer in the same cell and told them to come up with a joint plan...

Their "conversation" literally came down to blows...it was going to end-up in a physical brawl! (not to mention a possible international incident).

In the end, we separated them and from that point onwards there was a policy for our facility: DO NOT PLACE GRECIAN AND TURKISH OFFICERS IN THE SAME ROOM TOGETHER! - Especially not alone and left to their own devices.

And speaking of Cyprus...this brings up another WPC story.

A few years later, we hosted another NATO computer-assisted exercise.

In the actual game, when a unit is destroyed, it needs to be moved off of the playing field. The playing field was basically central Europe. The programmers decided to have a place reserved in the lower right-corner of the map - were all "dead" units would be placed. Since they were combat ineffective the game would not have them fighting amongst themselves.

It all looked good on paper...

There was a slight problem with the game program - allowing logistical players to "resupply" units (this included resupplying the "dead"units in the lower right corner of the map.

It just so happens that this game "cemetery" was on the isle of Cyprus...so now we had the Greeks throwing all of their resupplies onto their "dead" units on Cyprus while the Turks were doing the same - Totally ignoring the raging war in central Europe - for the sole reason as to lay final claim to the entire island with an international audience as their witness.

We explained that the "dead zone" was just the corner of the map and not to be taken literally for it's location. Both sides did not buy our excuse.

We eventually had our programmers remove the "dead zone" off of the map and not allow resupply of "dead units" so that this would not occur again.

I was really surprised that both the Greek and Turkish Governments were willing to use a computer assisted game as evidence to NATO of their entitlement to the Isle of Cyprus - but then, this issue has been brewing for years.

HELIOS: Helios is a greek word but many companies from around the world use greek words for their brands

well military people are usually idiots
on the other hand we've had turkish players playing in our basketball and football teams, greek actors playing in turkish tv shows etc.

Actually, I am glad to hear that. My impression (at the time) was not to mix the two or you would have a conflict. I'm glad the world is coming closer together.
