Are the pollutants really that much worse than from burning any hydro-carbon product? If they are, how hard would it be to sequester their exhaust in a large enough facility?

Compacting and storage sounds fine to me too.

Annual world usage of plastic bags is ~5 megatons. Assuming a density near that of water when compacted that would represent a cube ~170 meters on a side. Doesn't seem like an insurmountable problem...

I don't think it's worse than burning other hydrocarbs. If we could sequester teh pollutants released by burning coal/petrol/etc., that would be preferable to dumping them in teh air, I think.
