  • Don't go swimming on a full stomach

Remember how we were told as kids that one should always wait a couple of hours from having had a meal before going swimming?

I never really understood why, I just complied, as my respect for authorities was already highly developed at quite an unusually young age. As you might imagine.

Not that I have any intention of going swimming, but I just had a late lunch and a shower, and I'm a little worried that one of my ears might fall off. Not much, but a little. I have nice ears you know.

Does anyone know the explanation behind the full stomach and swimming thing?

It was always claimed that you would cramp up. The only effect I've ever noticed is an unpleasant sense of nausea.

Actually, that's exactly what I thought to myself after I typed it.

Don't do it Winston. You'll create a space-time rupture and I T-Rex will come to eat you.

I read that the advice to not swim just after eating is based on a myth.

It is a myth, I think it is thought that the circulation required in transporting nutrients from the digestive tract via the hepatic portal vein will mean you have insufficient circulation to perform strenuous exercise. It isn't true. It is just uncomfortable if you have a really full stomach...

PH, be less boring. Look at Colon's post and compare it to yours.

                  Which is better?

                  I give you a D.

Hmm, doesn't resting a little (10 minutes or so) after a meal helps digestion? Maybe not so much dangerous or specific to swimming, but it's healthier.

Yes, give it an hour or so I reckon. Then if the gas comes through, you can propel yourself that little bit faster by farting
