The ocean surf comes in here 10 and 20 feet high at times. The white water in the surf is incredible. Strange that there's no oxygen in such conditions. With global warming weather the surf has been rougher than ever this year and that means more oxygen yet.

Oerdin, don't ocean plants produce oxygen like land based?

        That's it then, green dye.

I really should make an 'ask Lancer' thread.

Not all things called "algae" are plants (blue-green algae are cyanobacteria, for example) ...

Well, Patty hasn't posted yet so there is still hope Julian.

The facts are that ocean deep zones are real and growing, over fishing has has caused a lot of species to collapse (though Salmon is a popular fish and so gets more attention then most), fish farms haven't been regulated nearly enough so sea lice and diseases from farms routinely gut wild populations, over development and over diversion of water for farms & cities, water pollution is a huge and growing problem, and who knows what else are all contributing to the problem.

The United States needs much tougher water pollution standards to end the ocean dead zones, to protect water sheds, and fish catch limits need to be set by scientists instead of industry lobby groups. I'm afraid we are now reaping what we have sewn.

I know that most sea areas are in terrible condition, one of the worst is Baltic sea in which coast i live..

Too much phosphor causing oxygen deprivation and excess growth in blue-green algae (every summer problem nowadays) and new species 'migrating' (in ballast tanks). Newest threat to arrive is comb jelly which has been spreading extremely fast, and probably will continue to do so aided by extremely warm 'winter'.

Herrings have such high dioxin levels that they should really not be consumed, we got some special permit from EU to fish and sell them.. etc etc.

Oh, Dioxins. I had forgotten about those. I recall several articles on them; aren't they mostly a biproduct of the plastics industry? Making plastics also makes dioxins which end up in the atmosphere and eventually in the water plus if you burn plastic then you also release dioxins.

Wasn't dioxin poisoning how the FSB attempted to assassinate/poison the Ukrainian President?

I think the poison in question was dioxin.

Environmental campaigners describe dioxins as among the most dangerous toxins known.
It must be totally harmless if HIPPIES say THAT! Better than bird's milk!

Wiki entry of it is surprisingly lacking btw.

Dioxin is since long time known as one of the strongest poisons which man is able to produce. It causes cancer of liver and lung, interferes in the immune system resulting in a predisposition to infectious diseases and embrional misgrowth.

At the beginning of the 20th century the production of chlorine splitting sodium chloride by Dow Chemical Midland,USA free chlorine could be used for many new compounds like pesticides, plastics such as PVC,chlorine bleaching of paper and many other sources. Dioxins are also built as unwanted side reactions during the production of chlorinated products.

When these new compounds are burned as waste, chlorine atoms combine with carbon resulting dioxins. Dioxin is also originated during combustion, mainly by heat under 780$^{o}$C It is therefore found in the atmosphere and in the fallout in rain. A main source of dioxin is used discarded motor oil and in some geological formations like kaolinite.
                        That was new to me.

I do know dioxins last a very, very long time just like PCBs or compounds like DDT. And just like those other two chemicals they work their way into the food chain and concentrate towards the top.

To get rid of them in a timely fashion we need to start burying dead people in subduction zones.
