  • Masked cyberterrorists raid NYC and SF, give out hugs

Anonymous is running Operation Reconnect on April 12th to bring together families torn apart by Scientology. We are bringing to light the Scientology policy of disconnection, which hurts both the victims who were conned into the cult, and their family members outside of the cult.

After we protested the practices of this cult on February 10th, we have made it clear that it is safe to criticise Scientology now. Operation Freakout is history - so many people have already woken up, so many of their possible victims are now able to learn about the dangers of the cult, that they don't have the resources to stifle freedom of speech anymore.

After we protested the tax exempt status of this cult on March 15th, a resolution to officially regard Scientology as a business and not a religion was passed in the Republican Party Convention at Galveston County, Texas. The wheels of politics don't turn quickly, unfortunately, but we know they are turning, and we are making a difference.

After April 12th... how many mothers and fathers will be meeting their children for the first time in years, maybe decades? How many victims who have long since lost all hope will learn that their families still love them?

    You can help decide that.

Paulette Cooper published her take on the whole story of Operation Freakout on the day after the first Anonymous protest, BTW.

Ari I think I have noticed an anti-Scientology bias in your posts.

Well, the whole story is somewhat tl;dr, and not really appropriate to this thread. Still, if you're *really* interested, here's the condensed version...

Once upon a time, maybe seven years ago or so, I was reading an article about Scientology's recruitment methods. Don't ask me about specifics, it's been a while. What I do remember is that its description of which kind of people the cult really likes to prey on besides celebrities was basically, well, me: Young, used to do well in school until recently, feeling troubled, etc.

Ever since then I have been fairly certain that if I had happened to just bump into a free personality test at the right moment, I *would* have gotten in, taken their courses and "learned to communicate" and... instead of being one of the protesters happily singing happy birthday to Elron on March 15 at Vantaa, would have been cowering in confusion and apprehension in the Scientology mission.

Scientology's got some fairly well-developed conditioning techniques, you see. Are you feeling lonely, cut off? Scientology's going to love bomb you. Want to improve the world? Well, Scientology's going to clear the planet, what a noble cause for a young revolutionary to join! Looking to better thyself? Why not take our personality test? Don't worry, it's called Oxford Capacity Analysis (note: no relation to Oxford University), so it's scientific! Want to learn to communicate? Come on in and take these drills!

You don't have to be any more gullible than the average guy to be caught by Scientology. I certainly don't think I am. Still, from everything I have read - if I had lived in the wrong city (it did help ease my fear that there's no Scientology mission in this country within 500 kilometres of where I live, you know), if I had been in the wrong place at the wrong time... things would have been different in a terrible way.

(note: I am, of course, not representing Anonymous in this post. Only Anonymous knows the personal reasons why Anonymous is protesting - though I must say, it *is* quite a lot of fun!)

Why the anti-scientology passion Ari? I agree they are not nice people and would be more than happy to see an end of the cult but I don't share your passion for this cause. Why scientology and not some other equally odious organization?

Give me an example of an organisation as odious as Scientology that people like me are in a position to actually, positively do something about and I'll consider it.

Also, Scientologists are nice people. They just need to get out of Scientology first.

I came to know about them through their heart-chilling exploits in suppressing freedom of speech. I remember reading about an episode where they forced an anonymous mail provider in Finland to shut down because the service was used by some anti-scientologists for posting on Usenet.

However as I learned more about them I have become convinced that they are not much more dangerous than any other cult.

                          All of you people

Ari is doing something that can improve people's lives, lives that were destroyed by an organization focused on dismembering families for the only purpose of earning money, money that is tax-exempt, due to the common thought of C o S being some kind of charity cult/religion. But I am sure that you guys have more interesting things to do, hopefully something more interesting than watching porn and eating nachos.

I'm with you on this, Ari
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Scientology does not destroy people lives, it offers the greatest enlightenment one could hope to achieve as a mortal. The reason it gets attacked by these idiots is because people are afraid and ignorant, like the peasant masses of past ages. Scientology is the light in this modern dark age. Please have respect for people's beliefs.
