All that alcohol gets converted into sugar which gives you energy and wakes you up.

that sounds plausible, but my blood sugar is at a reasonable level at present.

If you're not diabetic the spike caused by the sugar goes back to normal in time. Still, that's what wakes you up.

Try drinking booze with a higher alcohol content but in less qty. If you use mixers then only diet sodas or unsweetened juice and make your own. Splenda instead of sugar. Sleep well.

i am diabetic, so i test my sugar quite regularly. i was drinking larger last night, a bit like most nights really.

anyway, i can't sleep so here's a story from last night. this girl grabbed me and asked if i could buy her a drink, she was well fit so i said yes, we went to the bar, where it became rather obvious that she was ruined, in that she could barely speak. the barmaid refused to serve her alcohol, so i got a pint and some lemonade for her. i was trying to talk to her but as she struggled to a) understand and; b) reply, it wasn't going so well. she then grabs my pint and throws some of it over these two black fellows standing next to us at the bar. they were not amused, and tried to grab a drink to throw at her, at which point i grabbed it and told them to calm down, saying that clearly the girl was drunk and it was just an accident. meanwhile the barmaid has called the bouncers over and the next thing i see is these two guys being thrown out, still protesting furiously. i decided that it might be an idea to ditch the girl after that, which was a crying shame, because as i said, she was well fit.

I don't know, but the same thing tends to happen to me. Well, apart from the few times I get absolutely wasted.

its because. after you have been drinking, you are not actually sleeping but unconsious, because of the poisoning. alcohol is a poison after all. after you liver have sorted out the alcohol you have drunk and you are not poisoned anymore, you wake up. after this you can go to normal sleep. remember to drink plain water and eat something with sugar in before you go to sleep, it helps with the hangover, fresh air in good too.

I get exactly the same and I'd always thought it was a hydration issue - but like the OP would like to see a proper medical explanation.

Ditto. I don't even feel sleepy, despite having slept for only 4-5 hours and having been pretty plastered the night before.

A blood sugar spike is what wakes everyone up. It's how people wake up naturally even when they haven't been drinking. With alcohol it's a false spike. You wake up before you are really ready and rested.
