  • RIP, Arthur C. Clarke

    Good Morning Dave
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90.

Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 a.m. after suffering breathing problems, aide Rohan De Silva said.

Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956, lured by his interest in marine diving which he said was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space.

"I'm perfectly operational underwater," he once said.

He wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey," which director Stanley Kubrick turned into a classic movie.

Clarke was regarded as far more than a science fiction writer.

He was credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits.

He joined American broadcaster Walter Cronkite as commentator on the U.S. Apollo moonshots in the late 1960s
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Although I absolutely hated the film "2001", I loved the book. RIP

I liked his writing a lot, and I am sad to hear that he has passed away.

Such an astonishing mind, and so many wonderful books. I think I'll read his visionary novel "Prelude to Space" tonight in his honour.

Don't worry, he's probably orbiting earth as a giant space fetus as we speak.

A movie interpretation of Clarke's award-winning 1972 novel Rendezvous with Rama is currently in pre-production. Acclaimed director David Fincher is assigned to the project together with actor Morgan Freeman. According to IMDB, the movie is expected to be released sometime in 2009.

I loved 2001 and still do. He was also a reasonable futurist as good as any.

And his wiki entry is being re written right now. here

One of the few authors who could rightly claim to have reshaped the world we live in both directly and by inspiring generations of others. He will be missed.
