    They'd punish the candidate, IIRC.

      What if he wasn't involved?
      And, what could they do?

That sort of system would be obviously broken. Just pay for an ad for a candidate you don't like.

You know that form response to anti-spam schemes? We need one for campaign finace reform...

Make him send the money back?

That's what happened with Gore with Chinese contributions, IIRC. He had to send them back or be fined.

I'm talking about the case where a foreigner independently buys ad time to run an add in support of a candidate.

Obviously, they can just forbid the network from selling the time, or running the ad. But that still seems sketchy from a 1st Amendment POV (granted, ALL campaign finance reforce is at best toeing the line there).

Let's say I pay for a "VOTE FOR MCCAIN" TV ad to air on TV.

              What happens?

Think of the practical aspect -- is it the TV networks' responsibility to examine the source of funding for the production of a TV commercial?

Probably not, but it probably is their responsibility to examine who's paying them for the ad time.

Joe Smith Corp, LLC is paying for the ad.
It is ownd by Charles WHANGNAN of China.

Do the TV stations need to look up who owns each company?

I think the rules are different for individuals and companies.
