Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

What I can't figure out is why anyone would want to settle there. It is damn cold, and back then probably teaming of wolves.
It was a swamp, actually; one of the greatest feats of 19th century engineering was reversing the Chicago river (it used to flow INTO lake michigan, now it flows out of lake michigan into the Ohio or some such) and draining the swamp. Probably not so much in the way of wolves compared to the foresty areas south and west.
If you actually want the answer, it is:
Location, Location, Location.
Chicago is a) on the mouth of a river from which you can get to the Mighty Mississip; b) on Lake Michigan, nearly the furthest west you can go and still be on the Great Lakes (but still be in range of the Mississippi); c) near the Great Plains states where the meat and grain came from; and d) not nearly as cold as a lot of places
Those came together to make Chicago a great place to build a city. Of course, the city was largely built as a result of the above causing people to come here, not proactively planned, but it makes sense when you think about it

Much better to settle the mosquito-riddled swamp where Singapore is now.

Dan, do you want some real ones, or is this just a frostyboy troll?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
