      • The mistake wasn't going in. Everyone agreed the guy is a mad man and deposing him would take little effort. The problem is underestimating how barbaric Iraqis are, they seem to love destroying their own country and targeting marketplaces full of children. Of course idiots blame Bush for this, and not the suicide bombers or Iran. Whatever.

        • I believe there were quite a few people who understood a can of worms would be opened by invading Iraq. Not too many seem to have been American though.

          • Everyone knew it was possible. Cheney did as far back as 1991. The good news is that this 'can of worms' is getting its ass handed to it by US troops, and in 5-10 years we might be looking at the strongest democracy in the middle east. Assuming McCain wins. It's pretty clear Obama and Hillary would not be productive in this area.

            • I agree in so far I hope that McCain wins for Iraq's sake.

                • It is true that the USA has invaded some countries outside the middle east.

But the number of regimes where the USA might have intervened but didn't - now and over the last fifty years, the number is legion.

                  Yet intervention is rare.

                  Except in the middle east.

Certainly Bush - and, extraordinarily, virtually everyone else - thought that a quick military intervention would be followed by improved stability.

It has been quite extraordinary to watch how painfully slowly the realisation that removing Sadaam made things substantially more unstable has dawned.
