I myself had the "pop" then followed by smell of burning pastic...
After inspection I realized the fan for the power supply had died...a while ago.
I figured, it's the fan, let me replace it. Tried replacing the fan to the power supply (folks at home, don't try this it is...well, not easy - it is encased into the power supply). Even after replacing the fan - nada.
So I ended up ordering a new power supply unit. Since then, smooth sailing.

Apparently it is difficult to make a robust power supply. According to our stats at work, about 30% of system failures are due to the power supply. That does not even count the motherboard failures which could be attributed to uneven power.
