              I'm guessing this has to do with sewage treatment standards not being high enough. Now days you just have to treat sewage and then you can dump it into a river with the next town down stream drawing water out of the same river. It's well known that drugs and hormones are in urine.

                I think that they don't know how to treat the water effectively yet. Filters for example aren't effective.

                        They are measuring parts per trillion. I Doubt there is much that can be done about that.

                            To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose. Also, utilities insist their water is safe.
                            Of the things to complain about in water, this isn't one of them.
