  • Rufus, please, I HATE malls, I hate shopping, but one has to or one goes naked right? The unfortunate thing for me, which Lancer may also experience, is clothes; most clothes in Asia are built for Asian sizes, so when I was in Chicago, I grabbed every chance I had to get clothes that suit me well - I was happy with what I got.

While I was in Chicago, believe me, I did what I should have done. I visited The Green Mill, I had the best beef, I ate the best pizza, I am that kind of person, I want to get knee deep into the culture.

But that is not what I am discussing here, I am discussing the lack of cleaning things up - things that should be cleaned up.

You realize, of course, that the cheap, crappy houses are always next to the train tracks.
I know, but it's an excuse.

The issue at hand is that there ARE crappy houses and little to nothing is being done about it.

        • I was with my colleague, female, singaporean, loves shopping, hates to go alone, I had little choice, but it turned out ok in the end, I saw the sides of Chicago, experienced the train ride, saw weird people, that reminds me, I couldn't understand why there were so many children with witches hats boarding the train at Chicago until we got off at Aurora - and I started laughing in my head, apparently "Aurora" has been renamed to Hogwarts. sigh..

I also bought clothes that actually fit me, so in the end, not that bad an experience.

And you like Singapore? Seriously, I discovered that Pheonixcager was spot on when I visited there. It's a boring city. There's really nothing else to do but shop and look at the few sights it has. I suppose this is part because of the strict law-enforcement. But Hangzhou has a far better nightlife than Singapore, and we were still wanting more from it. I guess protestant christians and the elderly would like it.

                • I'm still trying to understand why Chicago represents all of America (America = 20th century) and Singapore represents the rest of the world (Rest of the World = 21st Century).

Why are we only focusing on these 2 cities (except for a few incorrect pictures and a few jabs at Detroit) when discussing America vs the Rest of the World.

BTW I live in a suburb of Detroit and Detroit deserves all the jabs you can give it. It is definitely the worst major city in America. Suburbs are beautiful though. Yet I would still imagine that it is closer to the 21st century (however that is measuerd) than the majority of the "Rest of the World"

As I said earlier, I have never been to Singapore but, I don't know that I want to go to a sterile, police state that shuts down at 10pm. I have been to Chicago, as well as many other cities around the world, and Chicago is definitely in the top tier of world class cities.

                  • Because of the type of cars they drive in Chicago:

Well I did tell you to read the first post properly, I guess you missed me saying that or you're having trouble comprehending the first post, either way,

Dashi, I like Singapore for different reasons, Singapore has a better nightlife than Hangzhou, when was the last time you were even here? Sounds like 20 years ago!

And Dashi, again, Singapore IS doing something about those run down buildings, it takes time, but it doesn't take 50 years! I think the bus system at least gets upgraded every 10 years, and they are well looked after during their usage time.

It's a little thing we do over here, FB. It's called: private property. The people with money move away from the RR tracks, to nice, quiet, well-kept neighborhoods where people have cars. People who ride mass transit never see these areas. The people who buy those crappy houses near the tracks, in their turn, progress in life and do the same thing. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Let's not confuse an open housing market with government infrastructure.

No, but the thread title says it pretty clear.

I was last there in 2004, and it was a snore. Hangzhou was much more exciting. What do you find so interesting about it other than shiny things?

And Dashi, again, Singapore IS doing something about those run down buildings, it takes time, but it doesn't take 50 years! I think the bus system at least gets upgraded every 10 years, and they are well looked after during their usage time.
So if I go to Singapore, I won't see any crappy looking houses, buildings, or cars? Or how long until I won't ever see them?
