Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every way
I can't wait to look in the mirror
I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be one hell of a man
Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble
But I'm doing the best that I canI came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Once you turn past a certain age, you start getting a belly, etc. then you start to think "well if I'm getting away from perfection, I might as well take someone down with me (i.e. marriage)."

No, it's because once you turn past 35, people start realizing their failures (i.e. marriage, children, what politicians you supported, dreams of a better future, etc.). Perfection is youth, good job prospects, and not being weighed down by wife and kids.
