  • History Repeated: No Timeframe For Turkey's Invasion In Iraq

1974: Turkey invades Cyprus to "protect" Turkish-Cypriots. The occupation army remains there until today in order for Turkish-Cypriots to "feel safe".

2008: Turkey invades Iraq with no plans on when the "raid" will end.

No timeframe for N Iraq raid: Turkey

A senior Turkish envoy says that his country's incursion into northern Iraq will continue until Kurdish rebel bases are eliminated.

Ahmet Davutoglu made the statement after a meeting in Baghdad with Iraq Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.

Thousands of Turkish troops crossed the border last Thursday to root out Kurdish PKK fighters who have been using northern Iraq as a base for raids into Turkey.

United States Defence Secretary Robert Gates says Turkey should limit its operations to a week or two and not months.

"The American Government at very senior levels has been saying for some time now that this operation should be very short," he said.

"It should be very precisely targeted and then the Turks should withdraw back across the border. That clearly is our position."

Meanwhile, the Turkish Army says it has killed 77 more PKK rebels in the heaviest fighting since it launched its incursion last week.

The army says 230 rebels and at least 24 of its troops have now died since the incursion began.

A senior Turkish envoy visiting Baghdad has said it will continue until all Kurdish rebel bases in the area are eliminated.

They are just following the Bush Doctrine and taking out terrorists.

If they are there they may as well try to enforce reformed Islam on the locals.

The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

        We'll see.

US Defense Chief to Tell Turkey to Quickly Conclude Iraq Military Operation

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he will tell Turkish leaders that Turkey must conclude its military operation in northern Iraq within the next two weeks.

Gates is due in Ankara Wednesday, almost one week after Turkish ground troops launched a military incursion into northern Iraq to battle rebels of the Kurdistan Workers Party (or PKK).

The U.S. defense chief - on a visit to New Delhi, India - told reporters that he would reiterate Washington's position that the military operation end as quickly as possible.

And a senior Turkish envoy, Ahmet Davutoglu, is in the Iraqi capital Wednesday to discuss the incursion with Iraqi government officials.

The Iraqi government has denounced Turkey's military operation in the north, and it has called on Turkey to immediately withdraw its troops.

Ali al-Dabbagh, a spokesman for the Iraqi Cabinet on Tuesday said the military action violates Iraqi sovereignty.
But Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended his country's military offensive, calling it a "rightful struggle."

The Kurdistan regional parliament on Tuesday demanded the closure of Turkish bases in the area, including sites opened during Iraq's previous regime.

The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast since 1984. That violence has killed more than 30,000 people.

Gates said he will also tell Turkish officials that they need to pursue a comprehensive approach, including non-military initiatives, if they want to resolve long-standing issues with Kurdish rebels.

The more accurate parallel was the ~1920s invasion of Iraq by Britain. They were a lot less benevolent than we are today but still managed to screw it up.
