The affect/effect thing annoyed my geography teacher so much in the early years of secondary school that he devoted an entire lesson to getting us all to understand which was appropriate when. Although it could have been to do with the fact that he hated the english teacher and just wanted to undermine her.
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

It doesn't matter if it's disputed by wankers, it's been used for decades in the second sense. Both are valid in casual speech.

Have you taught them how to swear properly yet? It always annoyed me how bad my students were at swearing in English.

Nice creative quoting; try "Alright has been in use since the late 19th century; while some authorities still consider it wrong or nonstandard" I don't care if people started going astray a decade ago or century ago.
