    and the brakes on this windmill didn't work as supposed

    With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

        Those things have brakes? Why not just rotate the blades to decrease the surface exposed to wind?

            They do rotate the blades, but there aren't a neutral point and wind isn't a steady stream so they have brakes.

            Btw, I read in a newspaper that the wingtip speed was something like 200 m/s when it broke

                As someone who lives with wind, I can say with certainty that wind is not trivial.
