  • I'm rewatching The World At War.

This is the first time in a decade I'm watching this ground breaking British documentary series on WW2 and it is every bit as good as I remember it. Without a doubt this is the penultimate WW2 documentary with 26 episodes, tons of original and historic film, along with interviews of key figures from all sides. I wholly recommend it to anyone interested in WW2 history.

Originally commissioned in 1969 it first aired on Britain's ITV in 1973 costing a record $8 million; the most ever paid for a documentary at the time. It's just insightful and damn good stuff.

It's great, especially since at the time of making so many people who had major roles in WW2 were still alive.

Some things were still classified when they made it and it's missing code etc stuff.

This has motivated me to play a game of Hearts of Iron 2 complete with Doomsday and Armageddon expansions. The Panzers shall roll across Europe!

It's good series, they've got Albert Speer in it, they've got that secretary and everyone.

Is there also a piece on Finns using and then backstabbing Germans?

Mostly about skillful use of ski mounted infantry used to flank superior Soviet forces.

"France had been victorious in the first world war and a victory can be a very dangerous thing. Having won we were extremely proud of ourselves and allowed the army to decay to a terrible state believing that we so smart and innovative that we would always be able to win victory."

General Andre Beaufre - Staff Officer in the French High Command 1940

There is a lesson there about hubris which America might do well to listen to.

I'm watching that one now. It is amazing that they even found a former SS General willing to be interviewed for the episode. Himmler's own Secretary as well.

This was an excellent series. I really liked the japanese soldier's comment "all the surrendered British soldiers kept saying they were going to win the war, but I thought how are you going to win the war if you keep surrendering".

The best documentary about the Eastern Front is Russia's War: Blood upon the snow . This link deals with the German defeat at Stalingrad. and gives a good idea of the filming style used throughout the series. The reading of the German soldier's letter in this segment is quite heart-wrenching.
