1984 was about the increasing police state Orwell saw growing in Great Britain falling WWII.
I didn't knew that. So it would a thought experiment where he describes what would happen if the police State took over?
But I'm not convinced it was only about that. After all, I heard a couple of commentators say that it was a satire of totalitarian regimes like the Soviet Union. They could be wrong, but what they say seems plausible to me, given that the society Orwell describes was largely based on the Soviet Union.
