No, Castro's problem is that he is enormously popular both in Cuba and in much of Latin America. If Cuba was allowed to make its revolution in peace, other people in Latin America might get the notion to try something similar. In fact, people did, despite the terrorism and embargo we've wages on them for fifty years. Other countries outside Latin America can be allowed to go Communist, but tributaries of the Empire are not allowed to try to be independent.

All of which is to say that Imran's answer, while lacking in detail, was correct...

Sort of. It has more to do with being part of the Empire than being close by. Chile isn't close by, but we ****ed 'em just as good.

Just got back from a week there.

They seem to be doing better for themselves than the Dominican despite the embargo. Although that's just from a tourist perspective!

Cuba makes a better boogyman because of the proximity. Both the US and Cuba feed off of each other.

There's just too much money to be made in China to keep them as a boogyman. The powers that be always dreamed of making China one huge money making factory.

A friend of mine brought medicines and food in a few years back under a State Dept. license. He reports that, while doctors and cab drivers get paid the same salaries, the cab drivers get tips.

The LA Times has an article today on page A8, saying that Raul Castro has indicated he's favorable to turning over the ownership of farmlands to the farmers who farm it. And he might even allow family-owned stores to operate.

I remember when China began allowing its farmers to own the crops raised on a small portion of the land they worked. As a result, these private plots suddenly began accounting for a huge portion of China's farm produce.

I really think this and similar measures are too little, too late for the Cuban dictatorship. Cuba isn't China.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

That was part of an overall plan to move people to the city. It caused a lot of hardship.
