  • Tax filing question

I filed online for the first time and this was part of the instructions:

STEP 3 - Mail your signed form(s) within 48 hours after you receive notification that the IRS has accepted your return
Mail Form 8453-OL to the address above.
Retain the proof of mailing to avoid a late filing penalty.
We recommend you use this method to send your 8453-OL:
    - U.S. Postal Service certified mail

I received the 8453OL last night. With the post office closed Monday, how can I mail within 48 hours?

Also, I guess I have to walk in to the post office to get the mail certified?

I think that's for if you file on April 15th. I don't think you have to hurry.

Then why does it say "within 48 hours after you receive notification that the IRS has accepted your return" ?

Because someone is stupid. Don't worry, they won't give you a late penalty if your payment isn't late.

It isn't about payment though. It is a form dealing with electronic filing.

Don't worry about it, Apoc. You're cool. Think of that 48 hrs as being "within 2 business days." And yes, you have to go in to to PO counter to get the certified mail happening. There's a form to fill out and such. Plus it costs a couple bucks.

Generally speaking, if they owe you a refund, you can't get in trouble before April 15.

I am going to be out of town for three weeks starting in mid March, so I just want this cleared up by then.

I've never actually had to mail anything in... I gather you were unable to digitally sign it (usually by indicating your previous year's AGI)?

When I filed online the first time, I forgot to send the signature form in. It did not delay my refund but I did get a reminder with another copy of the form, in october.

Correct, since this was my first year doing taxes.

Hmm, didn't realize how young you are Apo Just mail it in whenever, they just want to verify that you're you. Next year you'll enter your AGI from this year and skip this step
