I realised the other day how stupid I'm being putting additional money into a pension when I'm in the lower tax bracket. Sure, I get 22% tax relief, but will pay 20% tax on it when I retire and take the income. However if I put it in an ISA (saving for a house or such) I pay the 22% tax, but when I come to spend it I'll be in the 40% tax band and thus will make a better tax saving than on my pension. And get to spend it sooner.

What's happen to Poly - we used to be a group of students, now Snotty and I will be the only non-higher-rate taxpayers there. It's all becoming so civilised.

/me can pun almost as badly as Dauphin.

Check again when im 30 I would be in the higher tax band had I gone the self employed route (except of course I doubt I would be declaring all of said income therefore taking me out of the higher band )

also as clearly Im poor feel free to buy me beer

In fact if anyone wants to meet there any earlier than that, I could be there soon after five, as I work round the corner.

ISA is the standard first savings point. Well known fact.

That said, pensions may be better if you take into account other beneficial employment arrangements like your employer matching your contributions.

We have 6-12% non-contributory depending on age, but no matched benefits on top of that. The only reason I put extra into my pension is we get another ~6% of our salary as 'flexible benefits', which we can take as cash (and get taxed) or buy extra days holiday or pension (and not get taxed). I just did a third with each, as it seemed roughly sensible, but I think I'll start taking it all as cash, pay off my debts and start on an ISA.

Do you pay NI on the extra pension contributions? I would expect it is arranged so that you do not....
