As I discussed last night, I *just* scrape into the bracket although that will probably extend further into it quite quickly so I will be trying to filter off some of that money into savings and pensions to avoid being heavily taxed.

Can you make some babies and get some exemptions, or is that just for USians?

Dauphin is the man to ask, I don't think you get any help tax-wise unless you are a low earner...

                      income tax allowance

Each person has an income tax allowance, and income up to this amount in each tax year is free of tax for everyone. For 2007-08 the tax allowance for under 65s is £ 5,225.[1] Above this amount there are a number of tax bands - each taxed at a different rate:
Maybe you guys call it allowance. Maybe you get an allowance for each person in your household.

It's calculated per person, there used to be a married persons allowance once upon a time which was a bit higher. You can gain or lose bits of that personal allowance depending on perks of the job or other things like that.

The married person allowance only applies if one spouse is born before 1935. You could take that option I guess......

There are other tax advantages to being married, or even in a 'secure' relationship. e.g if you transfer your assets to a partner who is in a lower tax band they pay less tax on that income than you would.

Family tax credits are upto about £60,000 or so. But the benefit obviously tapers the more you earn.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

this is a strange hybrid of a thread, tax, jobs and meet ups. I PMed Will and he said he would be up for it (which makes 5 with cort hous still absent, come back cort hous!)

                            time, place etc?

Yeah, Cort Haus said he is up for it. So I suggest we all meet up in the Cittie of York, 18:30 in Holborn. Everyone cool with this?
