    Grammy Awards

    The Grammy Awards were on tonight.

    At the end of the night, in a huge surprise, the Album of the Year award went to Herbie Hancock, for River - The Joni Letters, his tribute album to Joni Mitchell. Herbie was clearly in shock. A pretty cool moment.

    I missed a lot of the show. Looked like there wasn't a host - which is probably an upgrade. Toward the end, when I tuned in, they were deep into lifetime achievements, tributes to dead artists, etc.

    Any other interesting bits, cool performances, etc on the program?

    I bet Kanye's thinking, "Man, what do I gotta do?" Reminds me of the end of that Simpsons episode where Burns is at the Oscars, has bribed everyone in Hollywood... and loses to George C. Scott for "Man Getting Hit By Football". ('Cause that's probably what Kanye thinks of ol' Herbie by now.)

    Only other thing of note: Winehouse over Feist for New Artist? You do realize that Amy's probably going to be dead in a couple of years at the rate she's going, right, Grammy voters? Sad, but true...

      If you're winning Record of the Year, Best New Artist should be a slam-dunk. I don't know much about Winehouse's music, just all the um, behavioral issues she's facing.

      Looks like Kanye won plenty even without the big one.

        I don't know why Amy Winehouse got anything. Her music is horrid and she is a chronic lier.

                    Someone must like her music. It's pretty unusual for a Brit to win best new artist. NARAS is an American organization.

                    How is Winehouse regarded in the UK?

                      She left rehab very early.

                      For the record, I liked "Rehab" but I don't know any of her other songs. "Rehab" has a nice retro vibe to it.

                          agreed that rap has no place in teh grammys.

                          there are seperate award shows on BET that REALLY matter. nobody in teh rap industry that means a nickel to their fans cares about a grammy

                            All her songs have that retro vibe. They're all pretty good as individual songs (plus, as on rehab, she makes good use of horn sections; tehre really needs to be more horn in pop music), but a whole album of them seems like it would get kind of old after a while, which is why I haven't picked up the cd.

                              she had the best selling album here last year
