Israeli pilots could fly high on anti-impotence pill

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A drug used to treat erectile dysfunction could help Israeli fighter pilots perform better at high altitudes, the Israeli military's official magazine said on Thursday.

A retired Israeli general, plans to present to the air force the results of a study he conducted on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. He found that tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis tablets, improved breathing in thin atmosphere.

"The study's findings justify the continuation of tests with drugs of this type in low oxygen environments," an unnamed air force officer told Bamahaneh, the military's weekly magazine.

I would guess that this will improve the reliability of Israeli missles as well.

Might be some aircraft modifications needed, such as interior windshield wipers.

Seems to be so - Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat writes that "doctors noticed that mountain climbers who used drugs meant for treatment for erectile dysfunction suffered less from fatigue and dizziness compared to those who did not use it".

I always thought that these drugs were supposed to get blood flow in some other place than head.

Viagra is given under another name to people who have Pulmonary Hypertension, a condition in which blood pressure in the pulmonary artery is elevated. The most common cause is chronic lung disease. When areas of the lung are under ventilated, due to a variety of diseases, the arteries going to those areas constrict. If this condition is widespread throughout the lungs then pressure in the Pulmonary Artery has to rise in order to force an adequate amount of blood through. Since the right side of the heart is much weaker than the left an increase in Pulmonary Artery resistance can overwhelm the right heart leading to heart failure. Viagra and its relatives, Cialis and Levitra, dilate the Pulmonary Arteries and thus can help alleviate Pulmonary Hypertension.

Presumably this property is useful at high altitudes where the decreased oxygen pressure causes contraction of the pulmonary arteries and hence pulmonary hypertension, which decreases cardiac efficiency.
