There are only about 4 billion IP addresses. There are 6 billion people in the world. Two people cannot be assigned the same IP address on the same internet. Therefore, not everyone can get a static IP on the Internet. QED.

If you have a normal connection like most of us, your ISP resets your IP once in 24 hours, just to make sure you aren't running any servers at home

Not all ISPs, that's for sure. I'm not sure if I have one from my ISP, never bothered to check.

Hellspawn like Deutsche Telekom and their minions do that. You still can run a server, that's what dyndns and co. are for.

Abilene Network is the U.S. high-performance backbone network created by the Internet2 community.

One of the project's aims was to achieve 100 megabit connectivity between every node by the end of 2006. Over 220 member institutions participate in Abilene, mostly universities and some corporate and affiliate institutions, in all of the US states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

When it was established in 1999, the network backbone had a capacity of 2.5 Gigabits per second. An upgrade to 10 gigabits per second began in 2003 and was completed on February 4, 2004.

My D-Link router does it too. Even in vain, because I don't run a server.

Oh, you guys are still using IPv4?

Since not "everyone" can even get an IPv6 address in the first place, I deliberately restricted the argument to IPv4
