    Chavez calls for anti-US alliance

    By James Ingham
    BBC News, Caracas

Chavez has been keen to mobilise anti-US opinion in the region
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has called on other Latin American and Caribbean countries to form a military alliance against the United States.
The vehemently anti-US leader says Nicaragua, Bolivia, Cuba and Dominica should create one united force.

Mr Chavez, a long time critic of what he sees as US imperialism, made the comments after a summit of its leaders.

Despite constant US denials, Mr Chavez is convinced it poses a serious threat to South and Central America.

Venezuela's socialist leader has long been a critic of what he sees as US imperialism.

He has recently accused the country of trying to destabilise the region by forging stronger links with Colombia.

Mr Chavez has some key allies in his fight against capitalism, globalisation and the US.

Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua and now the Caribbean island of Dominica are all members of a trade alliance known as the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, a group that takes its name from South America's independence leader, Simon Bolivar.

Mr Chavez has urged them to draw up a joint defence policy and create a united military force against US imperialism.

"If the US threatens one of us, it threatens all of us," he said, "we will respond as one."

Gee, not at all paranoid. If Bush wanted Chavez gone, he would have done it long ago. IMHO.

Not mentioned in the article was Chavez's call to have these countries place reserve funds into one of his(CIA) banks.

Chavez needs to make a scapegoat of America to distract his people from their county's crippling lugnut shortage.

Naw, he's not really paranoid. He's just trying to drum up paranoia against the US in order to appeal to populism. I mean you have to have an evil enemy to rally against other wise people might notice what a totalitarian piece of dog crap Chavez is.

I'm not familiar with the armed forces of the world; assuming we weren't already too busy with Iraq to bother invading S.A., would all those nations together pose much more of a threat (from a strictly military perspective) than one alone? I mean, what are they flying, surplus F-15s?

I think I'll have to once again side with the King of Spain.

Not so much. Assassinations aren't so easy as all that. They tried to kill Castro hundreds of times, and he's still around. And the American Empire's adventures in the Middle East have effectively bogged down its ability to militarily impose its will elsewhere.

Keep in mind that they have tried, three times at least, to mount a strong effort to be rid of him, both in the coup attempt and the two recall efforts (one legal the other not). All failed spectacularly due to the overwhelming support Chavez has from the Venezuelan people.

No, Bush doesn't want Chavez gone at all. That's ****ing rich.
