Oh, cool, a convincing argument that television has no value. Clearly your time spent masturbating 24/7 instead of participating in watching television has turned out quite well.

There's fascinating fiction (eg, Lost) and there's educational non-fiction (eg, Discovery Channel).
You're missing out on a lot, truthfully. Television is great, but in moderation.
I don't know "Lost", and frankly I found Discovery to be more about brainwashing than education, mostly on rather mundane subjects. There is nothing television can do that a good selection of books and a few visits to the cinema won't do much better - without all the idiotic filler that takes up most of people's time when they watch.
Yeah I like the Wire. Good writing, tons of characters that are interesting, all kinds of dimensions (crime, politics and so forth).... it's just fine stuff IMO. And actually interesting plots as well that keep changing, but not 24 style (too fast).
So And yeah, people should start watching it from the beginning.

There's no good series about geeks. Unless I've missed something.

Easily one of my favorite shows (along with Trailer Park Boys, the Boondocks, and the Colbert Report). The show's really good for people who like politics (within the police department, among the gangs, in the city government, and now the media - and how they all relate). The show really clicked with me when the Baltimore gangs were forming a co-op, instituting Roberts rules of order, etc. And it's more than your run of the mill police drama, but a portrait of a city. The fourth season is fantastic.

Plenty of great and intelligent TV shows if you know where to look (well, right now with the writers strike, it's a bit harder).
Frankly, Winston isn't a great argument for the non-watching of TV.

I really like The Shield better though I generally don't like police dramas. Indie or other wise.
After watching the first four seasons of the Wire I went back and watched the last season of the Shield. I used to like the shield a lot, but after watching the Wire I could barely stand watching the Shield in comparison, so much silly drama and cliffhangers that go nowhere. The Wire doesn't have cliffhangers, it just kills people
Kind of like the TV version of A Song of Ice and Fire by George Martin, except Omar is much cooler than Loras

You mean to tell me you people still watch TV?
Suckers.
As a rabid anti-TV crusader I have to say that The Wire is easily one of the best shows to ever be shown on TV. I'm purposely saving up S05 episodes so that I can have an hours long orgy of truly immersive, compelling and brilliantly executed drama. If you only ever watch one TV show it should be this one.
