I second the Donna Tartt and David Lodge books.

And if you're up to it, I highly recommend Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities. Its one of the best novels I ever read. It probably has one of the best opening paragraph ever.

Sting was the younger of the two evil brothers -- the good looking one. He was a rock star at the time. You should find some of his old music or videos; you'd love them!

Dune (1984) was a wonderful movie. Movies should be different from books, as they're a different medium and have entirely different purposes and operating principles; most movie translations from books that are completely faithful are unwatchable.

Sting is a very famous singer (even today), he sang the old songs Roxeanne and Every Breath You Take which you probably have heard, and Fields of Gold that is much more recent (2005-6). He used to sing with the band Police including one of my favorite songs of the 1970s, The Russians I think it's called ("I hope the Russians love their children too...")

It's Russians, from Dream of the Blue Turtle from 1985.

It's not even the best song on the Album. Moon Ove Bourbon Street is the best song.

There's a moon over bourbon street tonight
I see faces as they pass beneath the pale lamplight
I've no choice but to follow that call
The bright lights, the people, and the moon and all
I pray everyday to be strong
For I know what I do must be wrong
Oh you'll never see my shade or hear the sound of my feet
While there's a moon over bourbon street

It was many years ago that I became what I am
I was trapped in this life like an innocent lamb
Now I can never show my face at noon
And you'll only see me walking by the light of the moon
The brim of my hat hides the eye of a beast
I've the face of a sinner but the hands of a priest
Oh you'll never see my shade or hear the sound of my feet
While there's a moon over bourbon street

She walks everyday through the streets of New Orleans
She's innocent and young from a family of means
I have stood many times outside her window at night
To struggle with my instinct in the pale moonlight
How could I be this way when I pray to god above
I must love what I destroy and destroy the thing I love
Oh you'll never see my shade or hear the sound of my feet
While there's a moon over bourbon street

A song inspired by Interview with the Vampire.

                ACK!

I also liked the movie. I especially enjoyed its overall style, the art direction and the costumes. But the story was needlessly obscure, because they had to cut out huge chunks: the original movie was 3 or 4 hours long, IIRC. Some elements, however, were just silly, like the voice weapons.
