I thought you had a creative mastery of your tongue, AC. At least based on a few of your posts.

I've lost a word. It is a medical term but it's fairly commonplace. It is used to describe a pain that comes from a purely mental state, but which is manifest physically.

An example of this might be how if you're really stressed, it can cause phantom pains in your stomach, etc.

I believe the word is Greek or Latinate in its origin. Can you help me, O silver-tongue Polytoners?

Err, isn't that supposed to go in the mineral oil cooled computer thread?

Edit: After I hit the post button, the quote that came up was "You fill a much-needed gap". Says it all, I think

Meh, that was an easy one. But I'm quite sure LS has a very large vocabulary.

This is a more recent thread, I just thought people should appreciate your effort.

                    Actually, it's hypocondria.

Psychosomatic means a physicial disease brought on by the mind. A good example is an ulcer.

I lost that same word just a day or two ago.

But then I thought of it.

But I wasn't entirely positive I was right. So thanks for making the thread, cause now I know I got it right.

                            Ah, cross post with Zkribbler.

That is exactly why I wasn't sure I was right. I remembered there being two words that were related, and I was pretty sure Psychosomatic was the one I didn't want, but couldn't think of the correct word (hypochondriac).

So in the last 3 minutes I've had the wrong word confirmed for me, and then taken away and instead had my doubts confirmed.

                            Haha.

                              According to wiki:

Hypochondriasis (or hypochondria, sometimes referred to as health anxiety/health phobia) refers to an excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness.

Psychosomatic illness, now more commonly referred to as psychophysiologic illness, are disorders whose symptoms are caused by mental processes of the sufferer rather than immediate physiological causes.
