  • Mineral oil cooled computer

I went to visit my brother in Seattle over the New Year and saw that he had a new computer. It sat in a fish tank and used mineral oil to cool instead of fans.

I didn't take any pictures but he tells me he got it set up from this web page: http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php

I don't know much about computers but this struck me as being fairly noteworthy.

This is pretty neat, but it demonstrates how absurdly wasteful computer parts are nowadays.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I've used mineral water to cool a computer once. Sadly it didn't function the same afterwards.

The system under load was a different story. We started 3DMark06 looping, and watched the temperatures climb. It took a really long time. After an amazing 12 hours, the system topped out with a CPU temperature of 88C. Yes, that is really hot...on the other hand, the system was rock solid and didn't crash when running 3DMark06 for 48 hours at these temperatures. While you could add some radiators and pump the oil through to cool it, you realistically would not be gaming constantly for 12 hours, so these temperatures are as extreme as it gets for this system
        Clearly these bozos aren't civvers.

I feel deprived by the lack of sexual innuendo in Ali's post .

Oh, on topic, I've seen things like this being done for fun by tech websites, but didn't see the point really for having it for personal use.

I believe my bro was using it as a server computer, and nothing else.

He had a frankly scary multi-screen computer set up for gaming. That other computer looked like he was targeting world capitals with it.

For a while I wanted my next computer to be completely fanless. The mineral oil option is one way to do it, this http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/...TNN-500AF.html is the other.

Not really, power per computation is generally down. It's just that we're managing to do much much more computations.

I used Diet Coke once. That was even worse.

I don't normally go for sexual innuendo if it triggers a suspicion of incest, but I realize I've got a reputation to keep so...

                    *sigh*

                    Okay, here goes...

I stayed with my brother and he showed me how he gets his scary-large machine started up with plenty of mineral lube oil to reduce friction and make sure it doesn't get too hot for a lady like me to handle.
                    ...

I really hope my parents aren't reading this.

AC + oil - doesn't you have any imagination ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

I do not wish to use my imagination. AC's tongue is more skilled.
