Should be hanged from the nearest street lamp, I say

TUCSON, Arizona (AP) -- A judge sentenced a woman to nearly the maximum prison term for negligent homicide after hearing a recorded jail conversation in which she made light of the bicyclist she killed.

Melissa Arrington, 27, was convicted two months ago of negligent homicide and two counts of aggravated DUI in connection with the December 2006 death of Paul L'Ecuyer.

She could have gotten as few as four years behind bars, but Superior Court Judge Michael Cruikshank sentenced her Tuesday to 10½ years -- one year shy of the maximum.

Cruikshank said he found a telephone conversation between Arrington and an unknown male friend, a week after L'Ecuyer was killed, to be "breathtaking in its inhumanity."

During the conversation, the man told Arrington that an acquaintance believed she should get a medal and a parade because she had "taken out" a "tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot."

Arrington laughed. When the man said he knew it was a terrible thing to say, she responded, "No, it's not."

Assistant Public Defender Michael Rosenbluth told the judge his client has never been "cold, callous or flippant" about L'Ecuyer's death and has always felt remorseful.

Arrington said words couldn't express how she feels, and that once she's out of prison, she hopes to share her story with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

L'Ecuyer, 45, was riding his bike the night of December 1, 2006 when Arrington swerved off the road, hit him and then continued for 800 feet before stopping, according to Deputy Pima County Attorney Jonathan Mosher.

Arrington's blood-alcohol content was .156 percent, nearly double Arizona's .08 legal limit. She had been driving on a suspended license for a prior DUI.

    This is NOT acceptable behavior!

Do they now have enough evidence to prove the parents "just" left them a lone? Last I read, that's what the parents claimed, but experts (can't recall from which field) concluded that due to the levels of alcohol the child had it given to him/her.

I'm not sure which is true.

Gotta think back about what you said, huh?

Yeah, unless you're talking to your lawyer or doctor or priest (maybe not your priest since, IIRC, the government does not recognize a right to privacy with clergy), all conversations are recorded. What I don't understand is why everyone doesn't know this already.

There's a story in the news here about a guy in Spain who killed a teen bicyclist who is now suing the teen's parents for €20,000 for damages to his car resulting from the collision.

The driver was found to have an alcohol level of .15 two hours after the accident and to have been doing 115 km/h (three independent investigators say 160 km/h) in a 90 km/h zone.

Apparently, the parents of the deceased had just 3 days to file charges, didn't, and now the driver files against them one day before his own deadline. He was quoted as saying he doesn't need the money but is suing anyway 'out of principle' or some such.

Several points sound dubious, and the overall story appears somewhat sensationalist; still, there has to be some substance since it was reported in the mainstream press, and reading it just about ruined my evening.

The mother was quoted as saying "We thought this poor man would be haunted for life for having taken our son's life, but now.. the mask has fallen."

I hope the family used the media to spash this guy's face across all Europe. They can't sue him, but they can sure humiliate him by exposing his malignant soul.

Look, even if you are drunk you should always try to correct you spelling.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
