Well, the initial setting of the day (it was Lee day then) wasn't related to MLK at all (back in 1889), but I'm sure there were statements about hero of the South and all that.

Here in Virginia today we clebrated Lee-Jackson Day, in honor of Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. While Martin Luther King day is a mandatory holiday for Federal and State governments in Virginia, counties have the option of also taking off for Lee-Jackson day. Bedford County, where my children go to school did not take Lee-Jackson day off, but used a snow day anyway. Campbell County, where my clinic is, took Lee-jackson day off as a holiday.
