  • Phishing and irony

I received a phishing e-mail today. Much fun:

Dear Royal Bank of Scotland United Kingdom customer!

Our Support Unit is performing an arranged Direct and Digital Banking Service update

By following the link below please commence the procedure of the user login confirmation:

    * link removed in case Polytubbies are stupid enough to click the link and give their details *

These directions are to be e-mailed and followed by all members of the Royal Bank of Scotland Internet Banking

Royal Bank of Scotland Group does apologize for the troubles caused to you, and is very grateful for your help.

If you are not customer of Royal Bank of Scotland Plc please delete this email!

--- This is robot generated e-mail, please do not reply ---

Now. Why would anyone think that is a genuine e-mail?

    Stupid e-mail title? $10
    Bad English? $25
    Requesting login details? $500
Asking if you are even a customer? Priceless

The irony? Well there is none, it's just funny to me as I investigate a lot of frauds for a living.

Anyway, my personal opinion is that most people are click happy and will click a link just because it's there without checking it out first.

    Mmmmhmmm.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

The question is, do you ever catch any of these fraud-perpetrators?

It is a sad state of affaris -- I can see plenty of old grannies (or my mom for that matter) blindly clicking such a link. Have you seen those sting shows where they go after the Nigerian inheritance/coup scam artist? Pretty scary really.

In respect of personal bank customers it's usually cheaper to insure the sums that can be lost than it is to try and catch the perpetrators.

I knew that was phising right away because Scotland doesn't have any banks. Everyone knows that Scotsmen keep every their hoards of gold in large underground vaults.

Wasn't there an indent recently where someone placed an ad in [IIRC] the Enquirer saying "Send $10" and people did...then got upset because they got nothing back.

Don't do those links, please. They do cause bugs - some people have had their database entries malformed by such links, making them unable to use the forums until someone manually fixes their entry.
