Sorry, that was just my opinion... I was at work, and Rah wouldn't like it if I took time to actually read articles on Poly

How is this any different from George Lucas taking what he loved about old westerns, fantasy novels and 50s sci fi and turning it into Star Wars?

Jonathan Ive has long professed his love for Rams' work. But he's not exactly a slave to it. I don't recall Braun ever designing an iPhone like device.

I think they missed one. The iPhone's calculator app is an homage to a class Braun calculator IIRC.

I suppose if God had created you as the first human instead of Adam we'd all be living it up in Eden, given the profound existential dread you'd have experienced at the merest thought of even going near an Apple.

I don't get the whole issue with copying ideas. I'd expect a company to better it's own products by copying ideas from a competitor. Whether Apple does or innovates is irrelevant to the end user who, either way, receives a better product.

It's the kind of issue that would only matter to someone like this:

And yes, I agree with the idea that most good companies will take ideas from their competitors or predecessors and improve upon them. Everyone wins.

I'm merely pointing out that some people, namely certain Apple fanboys, have conniptions if anything remotely resembles an Apple product (see Agathon's post in a recent thread taking shots at Windows Mobile). This stems from a fundamental religious belief that AppleCanDoNoWrong, and anyone who competes with Apple is Satan Incarnate.

That's also, I'd imagine, Siro's reason for posting this thread. Ie, everyone copies.

While I definitely agree with Asher, I don't have the same position on this particular issue about stealing ideas.

Basically I think stealing ideas (including design) is a good thing. If it works, steal it, use it, sell it. Especially if you can get away with it. That's what everyone has been doing for the longest time anyway. So the principle of recycling someone elses design or ideas, I say go for it.

I think Apple is really basing their sales on few simple points. That is, cut the wide selection of products, and do only few. Do one laptop, one desktop, one mp3 player adn so forth... because then you can focus on them and really push them strong. Doesn't matter if they aren't technologically advanced or even that good. Doesn't matter if they are overpriced.

The fact is, most people don't want all the features available, the fact is, MOST people just want something simple. Slap around "cool design" and that's it. Charge it more, to make it more appealing and as if it is the thing to do. Promote the cool kid image, that's the thing that sells.

We, technology enthusiast, we don't care about that ****. We like features. Even if we don't use them, we like the idea of having them. We just like new and good technology, period. We like good deals, we like to pay what we think is good for the said components. And then again, we might actually use those weird features, we like that.

So that's why we have very little apprecation for overpriced plastic boxes with nothing new in them. In fact, we get angry when it is then promoted as revolutionary, as it looks to us like the dumbification of the world, because then you have fanboys who actualyl do believe their products are superior technology wise.

The thing is though, most Apple fans, they don't want to expand their computers and do various of things with them. They like to push one button and do whatever. Not for me, I like more open stuff. So when someone says to me, "My Apple is so much better", it is not a fact. THe fact that someone can push one button and all is taken cared of isnt' necessarily even a usability issue. While usability certainly is extremely improtant, I mean... tech for masses is basically prodcued FOR people. So usability is the other half of that, but we can always argue what usability is all about. Can you do the same stuff with your stuff? No you can't. Not only that, but I can expand mine almost to no end and I have tons of more options. The fact that you don't care about the options because it makes your head dizzy is cool, but I like to have options.

But let's not forget, masses are idiots. If I could can fart, I could be very rich selling it. RECHARGE IT WITH YOUR OWN AZZ!!! I'd be a millionaire if I had a good marketing for it. Does it make farts in a can a good idea? Well, from the POV of making money, sure. And some people just want that, farts in a can. Who am I to say no to them? If you want to buy fart, please, do. But that doesn't mean your **** doesn't stink.

I mean just look at the TV ads. It's all about cool image kids, while for example PC is seen as old and nerdy.

Well guess what? We who liked computers and tech were seen as nerds anyway, if you had a computer or admitted you like computers, you were a ****ing nerd even if you didn't look like one. OK? So you were a disgusting nerd, an idiot, and guess who made those iPods? Nerds. Guess who buys them? Well granted, nerds buy them, but it's mostly for people who were bashing nerds earlier.

Now comptuers are cool. Tech is cool. So guess what? When you're buying that overpriced plastic box, it's just karma getting back at you baby... I say good for Apple if they can take some of that money away, good for the economy, good for evolution.

I'm waiting for Agathon to point out how Apple innovated again with the iTunes rental service, which is in no way comparable to, say, the Xbox Live Video Marketplace.
