The problem is, they're letting Fred Thompson into the debate, and he polls at half the support Paul does.
Maybe they're referring to his national poll numbers, which are really low?

That could be but this is a STATE debate, using National polling numbers is obscene, the whole point of the early primary states is to test the candidates in a small isolated contest ware people without national recognition can prove themselves.

Wouldn't that make him the Banana option??

Geez he's a Texas republican. You'd think W would at least give him a little help.

Do we have to make the candidate selection process even more New Hampshire and Iowa-centric than it already is? What about those candidates without name recognition that are polling better in Wyoming or Hawaii?

A debate is about arguing who's position is better. Not pulling teeth in a vain effort to find out where a candidate actually stands.

For most candidates, they stand behind the latest opinion poll results.

That's why there's so little to choose between them.

Since this is the New Hampshire primary it seems like the poll numbers in New Hampshire are the most important. Especially since most of the candidates poll well in certain regions but not well nationally.

Depends on what your criteria is. There are arguments for either.

I know that as the primary season gets closer, I want debates to be more focused on the candidates likely to win the nomination, rather than diluted by candidates who've had, what, a dozen or so debates so far to deliver their message and gain support on a national level.

Poll: Rest of U.S. tired of Iowa, N.H. prominence

02:41 PM CST on Tuesday, January 1, 2008

                              Associated Press

CONCORD, N.H. — All eyes may be on Iowa and New Hampshire, but many of them are rolling.

Despite efforts to evict the two states from the front of the presidential calendar, both managed to hang on for another election cycle that culminates with the Iowa caucuses on Thursday and the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8. As a year of media attention reaches its crescendo, voters in other states are saying enough is enough.

The problem with that thinking is that the field is so open and so much rides on early primaries that it can go any which way. Two months ago Huckabee was a nobody and now he's the leader or near to it. The state debates should be allow all the candidates in especially in the early states.
