  • The Chinese are very serious about discount prices.

In China, 3 people were killed and 31 injured as costumers stampeded into the grand opening of a new super market. The French super market chain Carrefour opened a new market in Chonqing, China and to attract costumers to the new store Carrefour was offering steep discounts on every day house hold goods like cooking oil. The Chinese shoppers were so excited to buy these discounted food stuffs that they stampeded and trampled to death several of their fellow shoppers.

French retail giant Carrefour has apologised after three people died in a stampede in one of its supermarkets in China, official Chinese reports say.

Carrefour has also been fined 500,000 yuan (about $68,000; £34,000) for the incident in the city of Chongqing in which 31 people were also injured.

A Carrefour security officer has been arrested, and other employees punished.

People had flocked to the shop in November after being attracted by a big discount on cooking oil.

Prices have soared by more than a third in the past year.

    Emergency ban

A crowd that had been waiting hours for the shop to open burst through the doors.

The security officer tried to block the entry with a table - setting off the stampede.

The promotion was part of a three-day campaign in November marking 10 years since Carrefour had opened in Chongqing.

The Chinese government subsequently issued an emergency ban on shops offering time-limited promotions.

Chinese reports say Carrefour said it took responsibility for the incident and would learn from it.

They said the shop was responsible because of the way the emergency was mishandled, and because of a lack of accident prevention measures.

Carrefour entered the Chinese market in 1995 and has since opened more than 100 supermarkets.

It was only 4 people - I'm amazed the Chinese government even noticed......
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

The real blame lies with the table I'd say, have it put in a cell with ten falun gong practicioners.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars
