The monetary system can't just collapse in a way that would make existing paper money obsolete. for that people would have to stop accepting it in exchange for goods and services, which is highly unlikely. Even in countries which experienced hyperinflation and where barter became common paper money wasn't completely abandoned. It's too practical.

guns aren't practical. Only guns nuts carry enough ammunition to last any decent length of time. Most people don't have over 50 or 100 rounds of ammo.

The citizenry that serves in a public function such as fire, police or emergency workers will make the best of any situation. Many of the rest that have never gone without or suffered much deprivation won't have the history or associations to know how to deal with it. It's impossible to predict how they would react, but I doubt it will be patiently. Here in the Philippines they deal with such all the time, it would be nothing new, people would endure.

The military will need to take over to restore order so that emergency food distribution and a restoration of civic functions can occur.
