  • Is this a good mutual fund?

    USCGX

I have been doing research and apparently it is.

Basically I want to invest in it for a Roth IRA. Am I right in thinking it would be a good choice or am I missing something?

I don't like Mutual Funds. If you are going to go with a fund I would sooner go with a ETF or market index. IMO, 401ks would best be served with whole market indexes or index funds that track the Russell 2000 or S&P 500, or anything with a number in it. If you want to be more "active" go with industry indexes.

Mutual Funds are too secretive about their holdings and loads are confussing. Fund managers play to much of a role, and by the time you can tell if a manager is good or not he has either closed his fund or moved on.

Well then what specifically would you suggest that would make me a lot of money in 45ish years?

USAA funds are consistently well managed. In fact, the entire USAA organization is extremely well run. I would recomend nearly any product they offer.

I currently have a credit card, my primary checking and savings, a HELOC, my auto loan, my homeowner's and auto insurance, and a life insurance policy with them.

Their mutual fund results consistently rank above average and their fees are extremely low. A good choice imho!

Is the timing for it good though? I don't know how to read graphs well. Does it even matter if it is a mutual fund anyway?

I think the timing is fine. In fact Goldman just announced a new Hedge fund today that may be the largest initial placements ever with over $10 billion. The fund will be approximately 30% in stocks. That, to me, is a strong endorsement of the overall strength of the market.

As far as if it it matters if it is a mutual fund? Probably not...unless you have an inordinately large amount to invest. Mutual funds do have some advantages for the casual investor.

I just meant that if it was good time for that specific fund.

Or do you have any tips for a fund I should invest in instead?

You selected a large cap growth fund

Over the long term, value funds have done better. Also, you should probably invest in a fund that buys mid caps and small caps too.

Tips? No...and if you find someone who does, RUN!

What you are looking for is a well managed fund (and, imo, all USAA funds are better than average) with a good track record. Of course, the "well managed" is more important than the track record as all funds will tell you "past performance is no guarantee of future results". Still, the track record is some indicator of the management expertise.

The fund's expense ratio is 1.16%, which is pretty high. Over the course of your investing life, that would take a huge chunk of change from your wallet to manage your money. As a small investor, expenses are your enemy.

Index funds are a great way to invest, since they aren't actively managed and thus have low expenses. You're young, so you could take on more risk by getting exposure to the mid-caps, small-caps, and global funds. F.e., IWM is a composite based off the Russell 2000 (small-cap) index. 0.20% expense ratio.

IMO, this isn't a great time to be investing in the stock market.

                          Good luck!

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

You should have an international fund, too.

                              So I should buy IWM?

And Shiva, that fund I mentioned was largely international.
