Yes, it's true.
Do you enjoy yours? I hope so. I don't even worry how little money I'm making. Get this, I choose my hours, I can stay home and do my job if I want to, sometimes I do... I get to read books that I'm interested in and I also choose what is relevant. That means I read books that I'd read on my spare time, and I get paid to do it. I can use the resources of this place, well mostly means that if I need some professional help, I'll just ask and get expert opinions for free and immidiately. I consider this good because I love my subject so... nothing beats that.
Plus, I get to do stuff that would be usually considered illegal. But for research purposes, totally legal
. And I get paid to do it. Bonus, clients are actually interested in what I have to say, professionally. I feel good when people take interest and ask questions that shows me that I know about the subject and they don't, and they want ot learn. I'm happy educating them, because they're interested. Well they pay a lot of money to get the info so they better be interested.
In short, I come and go as I please, I have 0 responsibilities outside my project, I just... I just hang around and read my books
. Write a paper or two sometimes. Get to work with interesting people sometimes, and soon I get to travel a lot. This becomes a pain as well but at least for now it seems exciting to me. So I just hang around, do what I want.... and no one is asking me stupid questions. Plus I think there's an inch of respect from some people for what I do. It's definitely not easy, and there's people who are interested in what I do, so... I like it. It makes me feel like I'm doing something that I a) like to do b) would do it for free as a hobby c) people want to know about it.
Plus, I can't see any bad things in the future for me, because I've been with this subject for about... few years actively now, on and off for 4 years. I still find it fresh and interesting. And I'm still in the discovery phase, too.
Man, I love my job. Now if it only paid me handsomely... well there's ways to make money too. I'm just not there yet. My life is almost perfect. I just need to stay healthy. It's funny how you have something to worry about. Now I worry about my health, and my health is good! That means things are good
Man, sweet stuff... oh well. Back to my favourite books

Programming is so much more enjoyable than managing people in retail who don't want to be there... and frankly the idea of getting paid to do computer related tasks that I previously did without the pay (or similar anyway) is pretty cool
