Kid is doing a very poor job of explaining it. It's not about having right or wrong ideas, but in understanding who you are, what your place is in society, who represents you, etc. When you identify with your masters rather than your neighbors and coworkers, that is false consciousness.

For example, I'm sure you Canadians are confused as to why so many Americans would vote for the GOP, when Republican leadership has consistently been disastrous for them. When poor and working class people vote for the GOP they do so on the basis of false consciousness, because they identify more with the rhetoric of the GOP rather than the reality of what GOP rule will mean to their lives. When the GOP talks about the "death tax," tens of millions of Americans get caught up in the idea of how fundamentally unfair that is, even if neither they nor their heirs will ever be caught up in it, and in fact, they and their heirs will suffer from the loss of government revenue.

Much of the work of Western Marxism (or those claimed by the Western Marxists, such as Gramsci), has been understanding and examining the role of false consciousness in the perpetuation of capitalism. Industrial psychology and the advertising industry are both scientifically driven methods of understanding how humans respond to particular types of motivation and messages, and using that knowledge to manipulate people. People are tricked into believing things that aren't in their interests, but instead serve manipulated emotional needs.
