Open ridicule is a very appropriate response to such behavior as seen recently in the Sudan.

Respect, after all, is something that has to be earned. So far, the Sudanese Muslims have not earned that respect. Simply because someone professes Islam (or Christianity, or Judaism, or Hinduism, or Scientology,) and especially because they profess a fundamentalist version of the religion (which often means: a particularly ludicrous verson of the religion) does not earn that respect for them, either.
