It seems to be completely arbitrary who gets tagged with Dangerous Offender status and who doesn't.

Obviously, the people for whom it was invented are NOT getting tagged with it. Someone should be held accountable.

Don't we have a minister of justice? What's his job, looking good for the cameras?

ITs a poweul tool .I really don't think its the minister of justice's job to review individual cases but he should probably provide some direction-- However that will still have limited effect since the courts and prosecutors can only apply the statute as it is written.

Personally when it comes to things like child moelstation or rapes, I wouldn't really feel too bad if people got life for a second offense. For the first offense, the sentence should be long enough that all "treatment" options can and should be tried. If they do it again-- slam

If lack of prison space is the reason why we cannot jail more of the dangerous folks and repeat offenders, I am all in favor of more and more prisons

But then again for a lot of the more minor offenders I think I would be more in favor of a work daycamp model. Let them provide their own accomodation (live at home) and food (ie bring their own lunch)

For the serious stuff, prison-- I do believe many sentences are far too light-- If you rape someone at knifepoint I don't really want to see you coming out for at least 10 years

Lack of space is one serious component (the ideology of CSC is another...). Most minor offenders are already doing alternatives to jail or very little time.

More prisons is a tough political sell in most parts of the country, particularly in areas the current government wishes to increase its popularity.

Then there is the issue of funding. More inmates serving longer time will need to be paid for. If the feds hope to avoid problems with the provinces they will need to fund their "get tough" approach. Something thus far they have been reluctant to do.

For years Atlantic Canada would welcome a new prison as a job creator-- The problem is that it has been found that having inmates closer to their families can assist rehabilitation so new prisons are better located in Central Canada or the west

I don't see why a prison construction program should be a tough sell. The lefties should like the job creation and even the idea of "better" facilities for the inmates. Righties should like the ability to stuff more people away. I actually see new prison construction as being LESS controversial than changes to the criminal code.

I think I'm in agreement with you wrt to sentencing issues. Some people need to be locked up for a long time.

You may be right on the prison construction as well. I lived in Kichener when the P4W was proposed and built there and most of the area was in favour. The nearby residents were not impressed however. The difficulty I see is the enhanced "tough on crime" image that occurs every time a new prison opens. It plays well in some areas but many places will just see this as the Tories trying to "stuff more people away".

A serious road block to the Tories current proposed CCC changes is the lack of funding I mentioned earlier. There is significant provincial opposition to adding more "2 years less a day" prisoners to the system as the provinces must shoulder this cost. They want $$ to come with the changes to the CCC.
